“Concerning pre-Justinian law, Cujas has presented a collection of everything that was known about remnants of the same during his day, and it is all in his edition of the 1566 CODEX THEODOSIANUS. His merit in this work lies primarily in that first of all he supplied the 5th, 7th and 8th book of the genuine Codex Theodosianus, besides supplements to the 16th book, the first since the announcements by Canonicus Charpin in Lyon. Pithou too furnished him with several Constitutiones SC. Claudiano, and Loisel the noveallea of Matorianus, which besides others appeared here for the first time. The Lex Burgundiorum, also known under the name Papiniani liber responsorum, appeared for the first time here ….” (E. Spangenberg, Jacob Cujas und seine Zeitgenossen [Jacob Cujas and his Contemporaries], Leipzig 1822, S. 231f.) This work was not included in the opera omnia edition.
