The author of this institutiones commentary much praised by Helmut Coing that was first printed in Cologne 1493 taught law at the University of Cologne. This comprehensive and yet profound introductory textbook was written during this period and provided “concise, clear, legally insightful explanations of the text”. “The legal texts are stated; the literature is used only sparingly, with inter alia Bartolus being consulted”. (Coing, Römisches Recht [Roman Law] § 76) Born in Heyst-opden-Berg near Mecheln (Flanders) in about 1440, de Voerda matriculated in the Arts Faculty of Leuven in 1459, and from 1468 was rector of the Latin School in Mecheln. He then studied theology, took holy orders in 1483 and became a priest at St. Georg in Antwerp. From 1489 he studied law in Cologne, graduated as Dr. Decretorum in 1491 and went on to teach civil law in Cologne. There he died in 1492.
